Laser Vision Tests Before Surgery

If you have decided that you want to have laser surgery to correct your vision you will have to see if you are a goodcandidate for the procedure. Not everyone is. To begin with find a reputable surgeon and go see them. They will do an eye examination to see whether it can be done and if so how much work is necessary to correct your eye condition. They will also check to see if you have any type of eyes diseases. If you have dry eye this must first be treated before you are able to have the surgery. The tests that are done will include everything from the most simple to the most complex. First there will be the chart tests to see how good you can see. Next there is the refraction test. This one is when the doctor puts a phoropter on your face and chooses a series of different lens until you can see clearly.

As well, to double check your prescription the surgeon will use an aberrometer. This is one of the machines that you lean into and it automatically tells the doctor what your eyesight is. There are other tests that are done including one to make sure you do not have glaucoma. The next step in determining the degree of correction you will need with the laser surgery is to take photographs of your eye. This will be very much like mapping your cornea. This is essential to the procedure. The final examination step will be when your doctor discusses with you your overall health. They will want to know if you are taking any medication.  There are some medical conditions that will prevent the surgeon from going any further.

There are certain eye problems that will prevent the surgeon from going any further. These include keratoconus, conjunctivitis, advanced glaucoma and cataracts. If you are pregnant the surgeon will recommend you wait until after you have the baby. This is because certain hormonal changes during pregnancy affect your vision and so a concise report of how you see will not be obtainable at that point. Most surgeons will not do laser surgery if you have AIDS/HIV, diabetes type one or rheumatoid arthritis because these things interfere with your healing ability.
